Chapters 20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27

Chapter 20

‘It’s my new best friend, Claudius Templesmith, and as I expected, he’s inviting us to feast...'

'...Well, we’re not hungry and I actually wave his offer away in indifference when he says, “Now hold on. Some of you may already be declining my invitation. But this is no ordinary feast. Each of you needs something desperately.” I do need something desperately. Something to heal Peeta’s leg. “Each of you will find that something in a backpack, marked with your district number, at the Cornucopia at dawn. Think hard about refusing to show up. For some of you, this will be your last chance,” says Claudius’ ~Pages 273-274 I definitely would have showed up to the feast if I were Katniss! Peeta and her are really close and he was dieing slowly and Katniss loves him even if she deny’s it and she has feelings for Gale! She needed what was in the bag, and like Claudius said it would be her last chance. I would have done anything to keep my companion alive especially if I loved him the way Katniss loves Peeta.

Chapter 21

‘Conflicting emotions cross Thresh’s face. He lowers the rock and points at me, almost accusingly. “Just this one time, I’ll let you go. For the little girl. You and me, we’re even then. No more owed. You understand?”’ ~Page 288

I think that Thresh saved Katniss because he felt that he owed her that much for helping Rue. I think that he felt like the same way about Rue the way Katniss did, sort of. He cared for her and was angry that someone so young and full of life had to participate in the games. Thresh wasn’t a mean person, he was nice and kind I think that that if Katniss and Peeta didn’t win it should have been Thresh and Rue. They were both really nice and could have had a future...well they wouldn’t be heartless like most people who grow up in the lower districts. People who grow up in difficult situations tend to look after themselves and distance themselves from other and stop caring, they’re like stone walls. He talked like he was her older brother on pages 287 and 288. Picture of Rue and Thresh you can see how Thresh feels.

Chapter 22

‘Every cell in my body wants me to dig into the stew and cram it, handful by handful into my mouth. But Peeta’s voice stops me.’ ~Page 303

I think that they needed the food more, in chapter 23 it talks about how their stomaches cramp and how they want to dig in but can’t because they would just throw it all back up. Neither of them were at their full strength so the stew helped them get strength back. They didn’t need medicine and they were all set on water, I think. They we wounded and needed strength. Katniss just got the backpack for Peeta and probably he need food to get into him. They were practically starving. The chapters talked about how hungry they were not how they were thirsty or need medicine. They were both fine, except for Katniss’s head wound, but even thats not bad enough to need medicine. The food was much more needed! Katniss was wounded so they couldn’t get game and it rained for so long and so hard, that even if she was at her full strength she couldn’t go out.

Chapter 23

‘I feel like I’m eleven again, tethered not to the safety of the fence but to Peeta, allowing myself twenty, maybe thirty yards of hunting space.’ Page 316

Katniss and Peeta’s real relationship on and off the camera is complicated! But...they love each other! In this chapter it showed a lot of Katniss and Peeta’s feelings toward each other! There is no way that Peeta is faking it and Katniss likes him so much but she is just in denial because they are new feelings to her and she likes Gale to. In the beginning Katniss wasn’t sure about Peeta and now... SHE LOVES HIM! Peeta has always loved her like on page 304 and before Peeta talked about Katniss was the only girl that left an impression on him. They are a beautiful couple... Anyway they both have such an affection for each other that it practically glow/sparkles of them. She looks after him and for Peeta just has a plain out affection for her. Katniss likes him because she... YOU, she, CAN’T JUST PRETEND TO LIKE SOMEONE THE WAY SHE LIKES PEETA! This picture is from a review on the movie and book!

Chapter 24

“And she was very clever, Peeta. Well, she was. Until you out foxed her.” “Not on purpose. Doesn’t seem fair somehow. I mean, we would have been both dead, too, if she hadn’t eaten the berries first....”’ Page 320

I think that Peeta felt a little bad but that he felt okay after Katniss told him that he did what he had to do and that it brought them closer to home. Peeta is very caring and in the games it sort of gets in his away. He doesn’t like killing people unless they hurt him or Katniss or if they’re really cruel, but even then I am sure he would feel bad.

He is like a big teddy bear! He might be strong and look like a grizzly bear but he way softer than that! He is very loving gets emotionally involved in everything...not always a good thing, but whatever!

... Don’t you LOVE my picture! I think that Peeta lets the loss of a life wear on him to much, if he didn’t kill her that way she would probably win, or at least come really close. Her nickname, Foxface, says it all...she is REALLY clever!

Chapter 25

‘My head snaps from side to side as I examine the pack, taking in the various sizes and colors. ... “It’s them. It’s all of them. The others. Rue and Foxface and...all of the other tributes,” I choke out...’ Page 334

Mutations!!! NOOOOOO! Poor people, how can the capital send the bodies back to their families if they’re DOGS!!!!! I think that it was totally unfair! The tributes died you shouldn’t resurrect them as poor dog beasts! And them dying was hard enough on Peeta and Katniss! How could you kill people and use them to kill other people!? I wonder if they have any memories that would be terrible! Could you imagine doing something you knew was wrong and having no control over it? Katniss talks about how it would be terrible if they could think, on page 334. I think it wasn’t fair to change them, it wasn’t fair for the dead tributes and Peeta, Katniss and Cato. Katniss got pretty upset seeing the tributes being used in the Gamemakers twisted games, and seeing Rue. The Gamemakers are so cruel how could you be so sadistic?!

Chapter 26

‘“Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentleman, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark! I give you___ the tributes of District Twelve!”

I think that it was their only choice. They would have been miserable without each other and either killed themselves or lived in pain and sorrow for what they did. They never would forgave them self. How could you kill someone that you are in love with AND THEY ARE IN LOVE! I think that it is just preposterous that Claudius said that they could both win if they were from the same district and then changed it just to see them kill each other! It was terrible! I was surprised that Katniss would do that, eat the berries, I think she was thinking of her and Peeta not her and her family waiting for her. Peeta and Katniss are to close to have killed the other.

Chapter 27

Page 372 and 373 ‘It was all for the Games,” Peeta says. “How you acted.” “Not all of it,” I say, tightly holding my flowers.’ ~page 372

I don’t know how Katniss and Peeta will continue their relationship ounce the cameras are off. Now that they are going back to District Twelve I think it is going to be harder for Katniss to realize her feelings. She likes both Gale and Peeta and now she has to choose. She can’t pretend anymore. They like each other, there is more denying it! I think that it will continue. Peeta and Katniss like each other and Katniss likes Gale but I think they are going to have similar relationship until she chooses... maybe sort of like Bella being torn between Edward and Jacob except not that simple...only The Hunger Games is BETTER!!!!! Katniss is just making things worse going back to District Twelve thinking that it will help her decide her feelings for Peeta and Gale.

I think it is going to make it more difficult for her. She likes Peeta on and off camera but she refuses to see that she likes him, thinking that she was just pretending. I think that when Haymitch tells Katniss good work and Peeta overhears and she tries to explain to him whats going on her reaction to his reactions shows her feelings for him. She is struggling to realize she likes Peeta, and has for awhile. In away her relationship will continue with him but with a different twist.

I choose this picture because I think it shows how she is torn between choosing Peeta or Gale, also the picture came from a girl's school blog on the hunger games! How cool!

Can you believe that they have Wikipedia on The Hunger Games!!!

Chapters 15,16,17,18,19

Chapter 15

‘I don’t want to think about what Glimmer must look like now. Her body disfigured.’ ~191

I think that it didn’t weigh down on her that much although she killed them and felt bad she always has the attitude that what she is doing she is doing for District 12 and her family it’s not so much about herself. That it is her duty to fight in order to return home and tend to her family, even though her mother is better she could slip back into the same state and she needs to be there to gather food because people in District 12 have to support themselves and their family they can’t afford more people to look after. Katniss is fighting for her family she doesn’t like what she has to do but its what she has to do to get back home to her family. She is strong enough to look past all the killing and see Prim waiting for her, that is what keeps her going. Katniss feels she is responsible for the two girls death but ignore it and just keeps going, eventually I think she is going to break down and everything that has happened is going to weigh down on her but right now she is just focusing on the job at hand. In away the life in the districts are like life after natural disasters except things never get better.

This Picture is a lot like how I picture district 12.

Chapter 16

‘“You weren’t just joking, about wanting me for an ally?” she asks. “No, I meant it,” I say. I can almost hear Haymitch groaning as I team up with this wispy child. But I ant her. Because she’s a surviver, and I trust her, and why not admit it? She reminds me off Prim.’ ~Page 201

I think that Katniss teamed up with Rue because she trusted her, Rue reminded her of Prim and that Rue had some qualities that would help her just as Katniss has qualities to help Rue. They shared food and water along with medicine, Katniss shared her sleeping bag, they helped each other a lot. ‘At Rue’s suggestion, we lay out all of our food to plan ahead. She’s seen most of mine, but I add the last couple of crackers and beef strips to the pile. She’s gathered quit the collection of roots, nuts, greens and even some berries.’ Page 103. Katniss really needed fruits and vegetables and Rue really need meat, they can’t survive and be healthy with just one or the other. Rue became a very strong ally. She helped Katniss tend to her stings and Katniss tended to her burn. She set fires to distract the career tributes for Katniss to burn/steal their supplies. They gave each other hope. They form strategies together. Picture of Rue.

Chapter 17

‘Feeling to vulnerable on the ground with my lopsided hearing, I scale a tree to wait.’ ~229

I think that after a while it will stop affecting her but that it will take it awhile to stop. For right now she is going to be more vulnerable and feel defenseless. I think that it will become a problem when she attacks the Career Tributes again and that it will affect her hunting skills some. She already feeling impotent and her ear is not getting better so I think that it will become a bigger problem and that when the book mentions that it is not getting better it is foreshadowing an upcoming event. Because of her ear it will be easier to sneak up on that side and other tributes can use that against her. It is going to affect her in more than one way. Katniss relies on her hearing as much as she does everything else.

Chapter 18

‘A rule change! That in itself is mind bending since we don’t really have any rules to speak off except don’t step off your circle for sixty-seconds and the unspoken rule about not eating one another. Under the new rule, both tributes from the same district will be declared winners if they are the last two alive. ... Before I can stop myself I call out Peeta’s name.’ ~ 244

I think that due to Katniss and Peeta’s predicament the rule change was in order. Peeta and Katniss are ‘star-crossed lovers’ show or no show.

I think that their relationship took the Gamemakers by surprise or that it impressed them so they want to keep them together like little love birds.
The Gamemakers and people of the capitol have taken a rather strange liking for the two of them and I think that the change of the rule was in affection to them. A lot of events before the game foreshadowed this event. Peeta’s interview and everyones reaction, their relationship before the interview, their sponsors. Everything between them and the game makers in away foreshadowed them both winning. Other tribute might have been or were close but Peeta and Katniss have a certain air about them.

Picture I choose this picture cause it is awesome and they're love birds!!!!!

Chapter 19

‘I don’t answer. If, in fact, Peeta did save me, I’m in his debt again. And this can’t be paid back. “If he did, it was probably just part of his act. You know, to make people think he’s in love with me.” “Oh,” says Rue thoughtfully. “I didn’t think that was an act.” “Corse it is,” I say. “He worked it out with our mentor.”’ ~206

I really, really, REALLY don’t think its an act. There is just no way and Katniss knows it. I think that she likes Peeta the same way he likes her but she keeps denying it because she is afraid of feeling. She likes him but I think that she has a wall around her and she doesn’t like people getting close in fear of getting hurt, like what happened to her dad. They both like each other and are close. There is no way they go on pretending the way they do and not have any feeling for each other. I know that Katniss is just denying it but I’m not sure Peeta knows whats going on he seems confused with Katniss. Everything between them foreshadowed their liking toward each other, everything that connected with what is happening know. Katniss knows its real but is to afraid to admit it.

This picture is a lot better picture for Peeta and Katniss!!!!! So much more like how I pictured them!

Chapters 10,11,12,13,14

Chapter 10

I think the Gamemakers would need the tributes to have this tracker injected into them so the Gamemakers know where they are to pick up the dead bodies, where to zoom in with the camera on the tributes, and it lets them interfere with the games. Also if the tributes didn’t have the tracker sponsored items couldn’t get to the tributes. I think that they will remove the tracker after the games because after the tributes die or one wins they are no longer valuable to the Capitol, they no longer full fill the Capitols needs or wants, unless they become a mentor. Still, I think they would take out the tracker because the Capitol is interested in kids killing other kids not seeing what happens to the kids afterward. I link tracker above because if you scroll down the page it talks about peoples opinions on the tracker, its pretty interesting.

Chapter 11

‘I almost fall out of the tree. The voice belongs to Peeta.’

I think Peeta joined the Careers because he is forming a plan. I think Peeta does actually like Katniss, like he said in his interview, and that he is going to help her when she needs it the most, like when the Career Tributes attack her again. ‘Peeta blushes beet red and stammers out. “Because ... because ... she came here with me.”’ Peeta has liked Katniss all throughout the book, ever since he gave her the bread, I don’t think its an act. Earlier on in the book Katniss talks about how she knows Peeta and that their eyes would meet sometimes at school, but they never talked. I think that his previous behavior, before the games, foreshadows that he will stand up for Katniss and later choose her. Peeta joining the Careers is a trap for the Careers and that it is meant to throw us off guard, most defiantly. I chose this picture because Katniss isn't sure if he is using that or f he really does like her.

Chapter 12

‘There’s someone out of there who wants to buy me water only Haymitch is refusing to let it go through. As my mentor, he gets to control the flow of gifts from sponsors.’

I think Haymitch withholds water from Katniss because he wanted to save the money for something bigger, more important, like the ointment. Also I think he didn’t want the games to be easy for her, if he gave her the water or gifts right off she wouldn’t know how difficult the games are or the struggle. It would be too easy for her. She struggles to finds water and food and survives just fine, like she did back home. I think that her struggle and her attitude to not satisfy or please the audience and her determination wouldn’t be as strong as it is if she didn’t struggle the way she did. Her struggle and success is what makes her such a strong person. Withholding the water and gifts was for Katniss’s own good, I think. Because he withheld the water from her and she struggled she probably got more sponsors because of how hard she tried and how she handled her small success. ‘There’s someone out of there who wants to buy me water only Haymitch is refusing to let it go through. As my mentor, he gets to control the flow of gifts from sponsors.’ I think that when Haymitch withheld the water from Katniss it showed that he believed in her and that he thought that she could making it. With Haymitch’s attitude toward Katniss’s strength, Katniss probably got more sponsors because he believed she could do it without help for the Capitol.

Chapter 13

‘The world has transformed to flame and smoke. Burning branches crack from trees and fall in showers of sparks at my feet.’

I think the fire affected the game a lot. The fire drew the tributes toward each other to lively up the games and make it more interesting. Katniss gets burnt her lungs ‘feel as though they are actually cooked.’ Also on page 180 it says ‘If the Careers want me, let them find me, I think before drifting into a stupor. Let them find me. And find me, they do. It’s lucky I’m ready to move on because when I hear the feet, I have less than a minute head start. Evening has begun to fall. The moment I wake, I’m up and running, splashing across the pool, flying into the underbrush. My leg slows me down...’ Because of her leg she ends up climbing up a tree instead of running away and finding a hiding place. Careers die and Katniss releases tracker-jackers on the Careers but not before she gets stung three times. If the Gamemakers hadn’t fired the fire then she wouldn’t have ran and the Careers wouldn’t have followed or the some that died wouldn’t have. Everything in this book leads up to the next thing/moment. I chose this picture because it is fire!!! It is sort of what Katniss had to go through. Katniss inhaled a lot of smoke, so I chose this link for sort of background information on smoke.

Chapter 14

‘The shock on Peeta’s face makes no sense to me. I wait for the blow. Instead his arm drops to his side....’

‘The shock on Peeta’s face makes no sense to me. I wait for the blow. Instead his arm drops to his side. “What are you still doing here?” he hisses at me. I stare uncomprehending as a trickle or water drips off a sting under his ear. His whole body starts sparkling as if he’s been dipped in dew. “Are you mad?” He’s prodding me with the shaft of the spear now. “Get up! Get up!” I rise, but he’s still pushing at me. What? What is going on? He shoves me away from him hard. “Run!” he screams. “Run!”’ After Peeta screams run a Career Tribute comes out. I think that some of the tributes will be mad and want to kill him like they did before, but as before, I think the leader will want to keep him still. I think that maybe, they might beat him up or someone will on the group but I think that he will be all set. I’m not sure why they won’t beat him/kill him but I don’t think Peeta will die off so soon. I think that his alliance, well sort of alliance, will backfire on the Career Tributes and that he will betray them for Katniss. Peeta to the rescue!!!

My reactions!!!

I thought that Katniss’s reaction to what Peeta’s said in his interview was cruel! He obviously likes her and it didn’t make her look weak like she thought it did. It made her have a mysterious edge to her and a charming side under all her armor. On page 147 they mention that it is the 74th hunger games! That surprised me, I was thinking more like 40th or 50th, but 74th! The Capitol has been killing/having kids kill each other for 74 years! At first I was surprised that Peeta joined the Career Tributes, but now I think it wasn’t a voluntary decision, they must have cornered him so he promised to help them find her, or they dragged him into it, or he has a plan in his head to turn on them. I don’t think that Peeta would really turn on Katniss.

Tracker Jackers! I choose this link because it gives you more information about the wasps...but be careful of the links and other pages on the site because some of them have spoilers! At the end of chapter 14 Katniss is starting to get hallucinations! I think that that is going to affect her game play for a while and that Peeta might show his true colors and come help her, or she will find some sort of plant to retract the venom! Also Glimmers body was gross the way she bloated so quickly and died! I think that because everyone, except Rue, probably got stung so that it is going to affect all of them. The way the body attacks the area around the sting is really weird, the way it blows up to an orange size and oozes, but it gives you an idea about how venomous the stings are. A wound that huge is not good! I chose this picture because it shows the size of the wasp, it is really detailed and its the way I pictured the wasps.

Chapters 6,7,8,9

Chapter 6

The Capitol has a lot electricity, not just the peoples, but the town as well. The Capitol has things like showers that have panels that monitor the shower, a closet that can be programed to find clothing you like, widows that can zoom in and out, and easy food access from an electronic menu. On page 75 the second paragraph it says ‘I program the closet for an outfit to my taste. The widows zoom in and out on parts of the city at my command. You need only whisper a type of food from a gigantic menu into a mouthpiece and it appears, hot and steamy, before you in less than a minute.’ Where as in District 12 they only have electricity occasionally however they always have electricity while The Hunger Games are happening. They have to hunt, trade or make food, bathe in rivers or other bodies of water. They don’t have all of these high-tech gadgets.

The Avox girl and the Boy

I think the two kids showed some sort of rebellion to the Capitol, or found out important information that the Capitol is hiding. I don’t think that the boy and girl were punished for stealing. I think that the Capitol might say the kids stole something to ease the questions, but something bigger happened. The girl seems to important, or big of a character for it just to be stealing.

I think she will have something to do later on in the story. All throughout the chapter Katniss keeps going over in her head that night. I think that the Avox girl is going to come into the story as an important character. On page 82 and 83 talks about how Katniss knows her. Also I don’t think life in the Capitol is much different from District 12 when it comes to always having to watch your back and watch what you say. The Capitol reminds me of a place where at first look the people that live there have it all but underneath there are people suffering, like in the districts. I choose this picture because it is exactly how I picture her.

Chapter 7

The Other Tributes

Katniss and Peeta Hide their Real Strength

I think that Haymitch didn’t want Katniss and Peeta to show their real strength during the training with other tributes so that Katniss and Peeta can take them by surprise. Haymitch doesn’t want the other tribute to figure out Katniss and Peeta’s strength so that the tributes can’t plan ahead and don’t know what to expect. If the other tributes don’t know what to expect Katniss and Peeta can take that to their advantage. The other tributes don’t know what to expect and Katniss and Peeta do, sort of. Also Katniss and Peeta didn’t talk about their strength during the interview either so they still have their element of surprise.

What do the Other Tributes Think of Katniss

I think the other tributes think Katniss is full of herself and that she thinks that she is more important because of where she comes from. It says on page 94 that the other tributes are jealous of Peeta and Katniss because of their entrance, because their entrance was so well and got the most attention I think a lot of people will hold that against them, especially the higher districts. On page 96 it says ‘So the next three days pass with Peeta and me going quietly from station to station. We do pick up some valuable skills, from starting fires, to knife throwing, to making shelter. Despite Haymitch’s order to appeal mediocre, Peeta excels in hand-to-hand combat, and I sweep the edible plants test without blinking an eye. We steer clear of archery and weightlifting though, wanting to save those for our private sessions.’ I think that because they seem to just breeze by and they do so well that people think they’re full of themselves.

Chapter 8

Katniss and Gale, Katniss and Peeta

On page 109 it talks about how Gale and Katniss met. Katniss had been struggling for six months when one day on her way home with only a squirrel she sees a rabbit stuck in a snare, a snare like the ones her father made. Katniss steps forward to observe the snare when Gale appears. ‘Well, Catnip, stealing is punishable by death, or haven’t you heard?’ They joked about stealing then they talked about their hunting style, Gale and traps and Katniss and the bow. They talked about hunting. As time passed they started hunting together and then it just became a habit to meet and hunt together. Whereas Katniss met Peeta before she started hunting, when her family was really starving. He burned bread for her and gave to her even though his mother was mean about him burning the bread. His mother made a big deal of it and called him names. However after their encounter they never talked or continued their relationship. I think that because Katniss and Gale met in the woods while they were hunting and their conditions were similar, their families. But Katniss and Peeta never advanced their relationship so their past relationship, with the bread, is getting in the way now. I don’t think Peeta and Katniss have a lot in common. I think that her friendship with Peeta is because of what he did for her. He is different from her and I think thats what she likes, he is still from District 12, but he doesn’t struggle the same way Gale and Katniss do. Peeta isn’t the parent of his family the way Gale and Katniss are. Gale and Katniss are friends, they sort of grew up together so their friendship is stronger and Katniss just thinks it’s normal, her feeling for him. While with Peeta its a new feeling. I think Katniss is going to be stuck in between Gale and Peeta, that she is going to have to choose which one she wants to be friends with. Also I think that her relationship with them is going to end up working against her, meaning that people are going to hurt them, and Primrose, to get to Katniss. Picture

‘“Peeta has asked to be coached separately’”

I think Peeta asked to be coached separately because he didn’t want to get any closer to Katniss. That he knows he is getting to close to her and that it will become a problem in the games later on. I think he wants to be coached separately because he needs to have his own strategy and that he feels intimidated by Katniss, I think this because when they talk about their skills Peeta talks about how amazing Katniss is and Katniss talks about how Peeta is so strong. Peeta cares about Katniss and she cares about him but has her guard up.

Katniss’s Temper

I think that the Gamemakers were so fascinated by Katniss’s temper because it shows her determination. She refuses to be looked down on or viewed less than everyone else just because of her struggles and because she comes from District 12. In The Hunger Games there is plenty of room for such anger and determination. Her anger toward the Capitol is showed all through out the book. On page 101and 102 it says ‘A few are nodding approval, but the majority of them are fixated on a roast pig that has just arrived at their banquet table. Suddenly I am furious, that with my life on the line, they don’t even have the decency to pay attention to me. That I’m being upstaged by a pig. My heart starts to pound, I can feel my face burning. Without thinking, I pull an arrow from my quiver and send it straight at the Gamemakers table. I hear shouts of alarm as people stumble back. The arrow skewers the apple in the pigs mouth and pins it to the wall behind it. Everyone stares at me in the disbelief.’ I think that her actions took them by surprise and impressed them.

Chapter 9

‘“Because ... because ... she came here with me.’”

I don’t think that Katniss will know how to react to what Peeta said. I think that it will defiantly take her by surprise. All this time she’s been thinking that he is planning her despise but he’s really in love with her. There has been a lot of events that have foreshadowed this event. Earlier when they make their first entrance Peeta tells her not to let go of his hand because he would fall, I think that this piece is more about him being frightened than him liking her but it still shows his liking toward her. Peeta stands up for Katniss when she says that she knows the Avox girl, saying that she looks like some girl from school that she really doesn’t. He goes on and on about how good of a hunter she is and how great she is with a bow. In a way, I think, that he looks up to her. On page 90 and 91 Peeta and Katniss are talking it says ‘“She said, ‘She’s a surviver, that one.’ She is,” says Peeta’ ... ‘Suddenly I’m behind the bakery and I can feel the chill of the rain running down my back, the hollowness in my belly. I sound eleven when I speak. “But only because someone helped me.” Peeta’s eyes flicker down to the roll in my hands, and I know he remembers that day, too. But he just shrugs. “People will help you in the arena. They’ll be tripping over each other to sponsor you.” “No more than you,” I say. Peeta rolls his eyes at Haymitch.

He runs his fingernail along the wood grain in the table refusing to look at me.’ It then goes to Katniss trying to understand, figure out, what Peeta means. Also I think that Peeta wanting to be coached separately was a sign that he liked her, in its own way. I think that I would react the same way.

“I won’t! You know I won’t! Katniss remember I __” ‘ he says, and they yank us apart and slam the door and I’ll never know what it was he wanted me to remember.’

I think Gale will be taken aback by what Peeta said, but at the same time maybe not, in Peeta’s interview with Chinna, he said that a lot of guys liked her, so maybe Gale knew. I don’t think Gale would be jealous, he doesn’t seem like the type of person. I think Gale will be angry at Peeta for choosing to tell her know, especially because he likes her and Peeta’s feelings and telling Katniss will only get in the way in the games. I think it’s one thing if Peeta likes Katniss but another if Katniss like Peeta. I think Gale would be surprised, and feel overruled or betrayed in some way if Katniss likes Peeta, which I think she does, and if she does and if she doesn’t that she will. I think she is going to end up liking both Gale and Peeta and having to choose, because of her friendship for both of them. YES! I defiantly think that he has FEELINGS for Katniss, just as Peeta does. I think that that was what he was trying to tell Katniss before they got pulled apart. I thought that he should have shouted it but I now think that its a good thing that he didn’t because then Peeta’s feelings for her would make even more of a mess for them, all of them. Picture

My Reactions

Throughout the chapters, I focused a lot on Gale, Katniss, Peeta, Haymitch, Effie, and Chinna and how each character acts different around different characters. Like Katniss around Haymitch she’s ‘as charming as a dead slug’ but, around Chinna she is herself, more calm and relaxed. I really like Katniss and Chinna’s relationship, it’s really unique. Also Katniss’s feeling for Peeta and Gale she likes both of them, both of them like her, she lived with both of them, in the same town, and saw both of them on a regular basis and yet she is still oblivious to so much. She never listened to them tell her that they like her and just never noticed how much she likes them and how important they are to her, until now. Everything is more important to do and more important to listen to, everything has to be done, and left correct, because they have no idea how the games are going to end.

Chapters 3,4,5

Chapter 3

“He pulls a white paper package from his jacket pocket and holds it out to me. I open it and find cookies. These are a luxury we can never afford.”

On page 37 Peeta’s dad, the baker, gives Katniss cookies during his visitation. I think he did this because he felt bad for her and did it as away of showing that he cares about her. Sort of like why she thinks Peeta is being nice to her later on the train. Yes, I think that Peeta’s dad will keep his promise to take care of Primrose. I think this because in chapter 2 it talks about how people have away of loving Prim and taking her under their wing, so it will come easy taking care of her. Page 23 and 24 about no one clapping for Katniss after she takes Prim’s place ‘To the everlasting credit of the people of District 12, not one person claps. ... Possibly because they know me from the Hob, or knew my father, or have encountered Prim, who no one can help loving.’

“I won’t! You know I won’t! Katniss remember I __” ‘ he says, and they yank us apart and slam the door and I’ll never know what it was he wanted me to remember.’

I think that Gale was trying to tell Katniss that he would look after Prim and her mom, how he felt about her and encourage her that she could make it through the games. I think that Gale would try to say those things because of their relationship. Gale seems to like Katniss in away that I think makes her guard herself. He wants to be more than friends but she sort of holds back. Gale isn’t obnoxious with the way he likes her so I think later on something will happen between them. Also when events such Katniss taking Prim’s place friendships grows and becomes stronger because with the person gone you really realize how much they mean to you and how much you mean to them. I think that this is in some way what is really going to make the characters come together in away they didn’t think off. I think that this story is going to have a sudden twist before the end.

Chapter 4

Haymitch and Peeta

Haymitch is the only alive tribute that survived the games and he is a drunk. I think that he is a drunk because he is so traumatized from what he saw and that he didn’t get the help he should of when he came back from the games. I think all of this effects his relationships with Peeta and Katniss. Peeta and Haymitch have a complicated relationship. I think that Haymitch’s slap to the face is over and that because he is Peeta’s mentor Peeta doesn’t have a choice but to go with it. That if Peeta wants to survive he has to forget about it and deal with it.

How Katniss’s Family will affect her Performance

I think that Katniss’s love for her family and her relationship with Gale will help her make it through the games. I think that because she has something to fight for, something to lose and something worth fighting for that she will fight harder and refuse to give up. On page 36 it says‘“I don’t care if we’re rich. I just want you to come home. You will try, won’t you? Really, really try?” asks Prim. “Really, really try. I swear it,” I say. And I know, because of Prim, I’ll have to.’ Also on page 38 it says‘Finally, Gale is here and maybe there is nothing romantic between us, but when he opens his arms I don’t hesitate to go to them.’ I think Katniss starts shutting Peeta out as her way of helping herself out later. The way she sees it she can’t afford to become friends with people because later on it will only hurt her. It will hurt her because when the times come she will have to fight them and kill them which will hurt her enough not being friends with them. If she becomes friends with him or other people she will feel more depressed and grieve for them, which she can’t afford to do.

Chapter 5

Katniss and Peeta

Katniss and Peeta form an unique friendship throughout the chapter. Peeta is nice to her, they get along and joke trying to enlighten the mood but, then Katniss starts to pull back not wanting to have to kill him as a friend. If she does not become friends with him it will make it that much easier for her. Its bad enough that they already have a history together, if you don’t know someone it makes it easier to harm them because you don’t feel for them; at least not the same way. She has her guard up like on page 72 it says ‘A warning bell goes off in my head. Don’t be so stupid. Peeta is planning how to kill you, I remind myself. He is luring you in to make you easy prey. The more likable he is, the more deadly he is.’ I totally agree with her last sentence, if she like him then she is losing a battle by winning, meaning she will hurt herself; more by killing him to survive.

“Plastic surgery, tattooing, and other bodily modifications are personal choices and could be viewed as a fashion statement or art form.”

In the Capital appearance is more important. They worry about appearances more, its sort of they’re way of living, religion, and culture; like the games are. ‘Venia, a woman with aqua hair and gold tattoos above her eyebrows’ ... ‘This has included scrubbing down my body with a gritty foam that has removed not only dirt but at least three layers of skin, turning my nails into uniform shapes, and primarily, ridding my body of hair.’ _Page 61. Talks about the Capitals view along with Katniss’s because of the way she words what they’re doing to her. On page 59 it talks about the Capital saying‘...the oddly dressed people with bizarre hair and painted faces...’ I think that to Katniss the Capitals people and what they wear seem so weird to her because at District 12 you didn’t worry about appearances you were worried about food and staying alive. It all seems silly to her while to the Capital it’s serious business.

My Reactions

I think something is going to happen later on with Peeta and Katniss. I think this because it seems that something is going on between them and that they’re current relationship is foreshadowing something to come. I get this impression from the tone and mood of they’re relationship. On page 41 it talks about how District 12 in school Katniss learnt that the Capital was in the Rookies and that District 12 in the Appalachia's. .Which gives us a fairly good idea where all on of this is taking place and how far into the future it is. It's hard to imagine District 12 and the Capitol the future instead of the past. I think that Madge has some rebel in her because of the mockingjay pin. It talks about the mockingjay and its history with the Capitol on pages 42 and 43.

Chapter Two

"Older siblings need to take care of and have responsibility for their younger siblings."

Katniss feels very strong about this statement. She feels she is responsible for Primrose because she has taken over as the mother of the house. They're mother no longer plays the part because her husband died and she has stopped caring. Katniss feels that she is obligated to this role because her mother acts like she is in a coma or isn't really with them, like her brain is somewhere else. On page 8 it talks about how her mother just stood by watching as they starved and on page 27 paragraph one it talks about how her mother seems else where. 'I suppose now that my mother was locked in some dark world of sadness, but at the time, all I knew was that I had lost not only a farther, but a mother as well' Further down the paragraph it sort of talks about how Primrose took it. Also Primrose is the only family Katniss has because her father died and her mother has basically died, the way she is so unreachable. And because of Katniss's love for Prim.

Peeta Mellark

I think that Katniss’s previous relationship with Peeta won’t affect her that greatly. I think this because she has something to fight for. Primrose.

Primrose is the reason they survived and didn’t starve. On page 27 the first paragraph it talks about how Katniss could never let Prim go through community home. Also I think that Peeta might have changed since their encounter. I think that he still would burn the bread for her, but I think that he has become mean. I think this because children try to impress their parents and on page 30 paragraph 2 his mother yells at him about how he is a ‘a stupid creature.’ People in the district have learnt that if they want to survive they need to be mean. They stop caring about each other so it doesn’t affect them, that much, when one dies. On page 26 the first paragraph it says ‘This is standard. Family devotion only goes so far for most people on reaping day.’ If family devotion only goes so far then peoples relationships with others are even more limited. I mean look at Katniss and Prim and then look at Peeta and his brothers. Katniss took Primroses place, but neither brother stepped up for Peeta. I think that the districts and the people within each district are divided and that they are against each other. Like on page twelve when Gale and Madge talk about the difference of their names being entered so many times.

My Reactions

I think the things that stuck out to me the most were on page 23 when Gale tried to keep his voice steady while Katniss took Primrose’s place and on page 24 when the people watching Katniss take Primrose’s place gives her their district sign. I thought that both these events showed that Panem can only do so much to divid them and that sometimes its not that people don’t care its that they don’t express their feelings. I think that the district people giving that sign to Katniss might be an event that foreshadows possible rebellion. I think this because they are expressing their opinion and I think it’s a start to expressing what they think. ‘Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don’t expect it because I don’t think of District 12 as a place that cares about me. But a shift has occurred since I stepped up to take Prim’s place, and now it seems I have become someone precious. At first one, then another, then almost every member of the crowd touches the three middle fingers to their left hand to their lips and holds it out to me. It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means good-bye to someone you love.’ Page 24 first paragraph.,r:1,s:0&biw=1039&bih=684,r:9,s:0&biw=1039&bih=684

Chapter One

The term reaping is used throughout this chapter. I think reaping is an appropriate term for the event it describes and the history of Panem because because the definition 'receive (a reward or benefit) as a consequence of one’s own or other people’s actions' is what Panem sees the Hunger Games to be. The games are a result of when the districts upraised against Panem in what was called the Dark Days. The Hunger Games were then developed as a 'yearly reminder that the Dark Days must never repeat.'

Above Definition~ is from a handout paper.

The Hunger Affect on District 12

I think that the hunger games effects the people of District 12 in a way that they are driven apart. The district is forced to treat the games as a festivity and some people do while others lock up their house depressed that their child was taken. The hunger affects them always. Greasy Sae puts wild dog in her stew on the street and says 'once it's in the soup, I'll call it beef.' I think this shows the hunger that they don't care what they eat, Katniss and Gale poach, and everyone is struggling to get by. It seems to me that adults stopped caring and now the children are the parents. This shows that people are so hungry, sad, driven apart by the need to survive, and affected by all the grief that they have stopped caring in general. '... all I can see is the women who sat by, blank and unreachable, while her children turned to skin and bones’ ~Page 8

Dark and Mysterious

The setting to this book so far is like a small deserted place, I think of it like the place in the movie 'Doomsday.' Doomsday is a movie about a place where an infection hit and the world quite literally forgot about it. So it is a waste land walled off with motion censurers to make sure nothing gets through. District 12 is like the same place only their government hasn't forgot them but are just barbaric. I think the settings tone is dark and mysterious. That it foreshadows darkness, death and pain. I also think that Katniss is going to rebel against Panem or even district 12 will rebel.

Primrose Everdeen

When Primrose Everdeen was pulled out of the cup and announced the female contestant I was angry that out of all the people with their name put in multiple times her name was picked. After all she is only twelve and even though she has grown up in District 12 Katniss has sort of protected her, page 15 'I protect Prim in every way I can...', and mothered her so that she is still a child unlike most children who grow up so fast in order to survive. I am kind of confused about how Katniss takes her sisters place it doesn't seem to me that Effie will just let her, its not like they let the town discuss who they will send. I wasn't to surprised though because one the back of the book said that Katniss takes her place and it was also foreshadowed in a way that made me very suspicious that something way going to happen. On page 13 'So now, at the age of sixteen, my name will be in the reaping twenty times. Gale, who is eighteen and has been either helping or single-handedly feeding a family of five for seven years, will have his named in forty-two times. ... The chance of her name (Madge) being drawn is very slim compared to those of us who live in the Seam. Not impossible, but slim,' this made me think that because it was being mentioned the people with less names may seem to be less likely to be pulled but the younger kids even with few names entered had a broad chance because their names would be on top, from mixing the names or simply because they were entered last. I also thought this because it always seems that the people that seem to be less likely to be called are the ones that end up being called. Then on page 15 when they are getting ready to go to the reaping it says 'I hug her, because I know these next few hours will be terrible for her. Her first reaping. She's about as safe as you can get, since she is only entered once.'

My Reactions

On page 10 I noted that Katniss seems that she is starting to or is in denial that she likes Gale. I thought this because on page 9 she says that she never wants kids and when Gale says he might if he didn't live in District 12 she gets annoyed that he does live in district 12 and he tells her to forget it. On page 10 Katniss goes on to think 'Besides, if he wants kids, Gale won't have any trouble finding a wife. He's good-looking, he's strong enough to handle work in the mines, and he can hunt. You can tell by the way girls whisper about him when he walks by in school that they want him. It makes me jealous, but not for the reason people would think. Good hunters partners are hard to come by.' On page 6 it says 'In the woods waits the only person with whom I can be myself. Gale. I can feel the muscles in my face relaxing, my pace quickening as I climb the hills to our place... ...The sight of him waiting there brings on a smile. Gale says I never smile except in the woods.' I think that the general plot is going to be about Katniss overcoming obstacles involving the people she cares about and fighting to survive. I think that the The Hunger Games isn't just physical tests but, also mental.

My First Impression

6. As a school assignment we are reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This is our impression from looking at the outside of the book. The Hunger Games above is linked to a review of the book. Michael A. Behr liked this book and called it suspenseful and had him sitting on the edge of their seat.

  1. The Hunger Games title suggests that there will be action and challenges. I get this impression because ‘games’ usually means some sort of interaction with other people and completing tasks. I have heard many people talk about this book however they don’t describe the book. They often talk about how much they like it, without giving examples, and that they’re on this chapter. My cousin, who dislikes reading, would go on about how the book is so awesome and that it is really engaging the whole time she read the series. From the title I suspect a lot of action and interaction between people but I am still just guessing.
  2. Suzanne Collins is the author of this book. I haven’t read anything by her before. I am, though, interested in the her and her book because she is a New York-Times Bestselling Author and I have read many good books with the same award.
  3. (Picture of the book) The cover of The Hunger Games suggests that the characters are fighting to survive, the bird and arrow, and that it is dark. It sort of evokes a sad, dark, depressed mood because of the dark color choices for the back ground and design. The font is bold and bright white against the black (see picture) which I think is to stand out and that white symbolizes emptiness.
  4. Stephen King, Stephenie Meyer, and John Green commented on the book. I haven’t heard of John Green but, my dad and brother love Stephen King and my mom and 2 out of 3 of my sisters like the Twilight series. Also one of my best friends are or have been obsessed with King and Twilight. Stephen King says ‘a violent, jarring, speed-rap of a novel that generates nearly constant suspense .... I couldn’t stop reading.’ Reading Stephen King’s comment I am interested in getting started. Green commented ‘Brilliantly plotted and perfectly paced.’ Which is vital information for me because I hate books that take forever to get into or are dragged out. I’m more excited to read this after reading the testimonials.
  5. After reading the slogan and back cover I think that this is a book I would pick as an entertainment book on my own. I like books with action, suspense and real life issues. This book seems to contain all three. I think that the theme is the real life problem. Choosing how far you can go and how you can choose survival over life, life being those close to you and who you love. I think the setting will be on a mountain in the woods because the back says that they are ‘fighting to the death on live TV. Also the survival information gives background to a place where it is difficult to adapt to the surroundings or rapid changes in the weather. Where you have to over come different obstacles against different things. I think the main character will be the sixteen-year-old girl, Katniss Everdeen, who is mentioned on the back of the book. The back of the book defiantly is something I think I will enjoy.
